Available for over a year

Annie Nightingale was a broadcasting pioneer with an insatiable appetite for great music. She showcased many of the most significant artists of the last half century. She was well loved and well respected by fans and artists alike. In the 1970s, men still ruled the airwaves at the BBC - Annie made history when she became the first female disc jockey to join Radio 1. Annie died in January 2024 at the age of 83. In this episode of our 5 Minutes On podcast, her colleague, the radio DJ Jo Whiley, has been sharing her memories of Annie with the BBC's Kirsty Wark. This episode is part of our podcast series, “Lives Well Lived”, available on BBC Sounds, and as a documentary on BBC iPlayer. (Image: BBC News)
