Saint Lucia’s Sports Minister Kenson Casimir has confirmed there are plans for a national holiday to celebrate Julien Alfred winning the country’s first ever Olympic medal. Alfred won the women’s 100m title at Paris 2024 in a national record of 10.72 seconds – adding Olympic gold to the world 60m indoor title she won earlier in 2024. Speaking from Paris after the historic achievement, the country’s sports minister told Sportsworld’s Lee James how a “celebration committee” had already been set up to celebrate the achievement including plans for a “national holiday”. He also says how he hopes more medals will follow for the country at the Paris and future Olympic Games.
