Happy 50th Birthday to Leicester's Haymarket.

Shruti Chauhan

Available for over a year

Leicester's Haymarket Shopping Centre is celebrating its 50th birthday. When it opened in 1973, it became the country's second two tier shopping mall after the Bull Ring in Birmingham. It transformed Leicester's city centre and many businesses within the mall have now been there for generations. A community event is taking place throughout the day today at the shopping centre which is now home to 65 businesses. Hear archive audio from 1973 when BBC Radio Leicester reporter Peter Crankshaw reported for a programme called 'In Perspective', a weekly documentary series on BBC Radio Leicester, followed by BBC Leicester's Helen McCarthy reporting from the 50th birthday festivities at the centre.
