Fashion show with a difference

In response to the global impact of fast fashion, the Haus Of Kraft Coventry collective, has teamed up with artists and writers from commonwealth countries to create a catwalk show like no other. Fusing arts, movement, music, and spoken word, their upcycled creations have gone from rags to the runway using only waste textiles and sustainable materials. It is much more than a fashion show, this spectacular event is layered with stories about the threads that connect people, places, and the planet. Directed and designed by world-renowned Creative Artist Jeanefer Jean-Charles and Designer Marsha Roddy this is a celebration of Coventry, where movers and makers of all ages and cultural backgrounds unite, celebrating the city’s diverse community, creativity, spirit, environmental consciousness, and people power. The members of the collective include 87-year-old Rita (who can make anything with a pattern!), Afghani mum Shazia, Colombian born Paulina who makes her own jewellery, Bengy who sang at Ghosts in the Ruins as part of Choir With No Name, and Shannon who has been diagnosed with ADHD and is the youngest member of the group at 25. The Haus of Kraft is on at the Assembly Festival Gardens on April 26th and BBC CWR's City of Culture reporter has been behind the scenes The collective have been learning about various aspects of ‘making’ and attending workshops since September.
