'Why I am disabled by society, not by my medical condition'

Live Wires

Available for over a year

If you live with a medical condition - is disability caused by your impairment, or by the barriers you encounter in society? The social model of disability suggests that it is the latter - that disability is caused by negative attitudes, and unsuitable environments which were not designed or built with all people in mind. So what is society getting right and wrong - and what needs to change? To find out, 5 Live's Tony Livesey and Anna Foster speak to Michele Taylor, director for change at Ramps on the Moon, Youtuber Gem Hubbard from the channel Wheels No Heels, and eight-time Paralympic gold medallist in dressage Sophie Christiansen.
