The famous overture to one of Mozart's most celebrated operas opens with a busy whispering and buzzing, which suddenly bursts into trumpets and drums. This blows away the opening cobwebs and captures the opera's witty mood. Although the work originally featured a slow, melancholy section for solo oboe, Mozart decided to keep the feeling of joyous energy present through the short overture, and in this form it is one of his most loved pieces. Composer: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Performers: BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra Conductor: Richard Balcombe Recording date: 05 June 2015 Date of broadcast: 05 June 2015
