Beethoven was the musical voice of Freedom and Liberty, like in in his one opera 'Fidelio'. Prisoners - many of them political - are given a momentary release, freed from the squalor and darkness of their grave-like cells. They respond to the sun and fresh air with a stirring and heart-tugging hymn of thanks: 'Oh, what joy!'
