Vaughan Williams' first symphony was composed between 1903 and 1909, with text from American poet Walt Whitman's. 'Leaves of Grass'. One of the mightiest openings to any symphony; the chorus exclaims "Behold the Sea Itself!" and crashes over you like a giant wave that settles on the high adventure of an ocean voyage.
