Enescu, like many eastern European composers, left his native Romania for the Western cultural capitals but returned to re-engage with the folk music of his homeland. This piece shows what a fantastic orchestrator Enescu was, cleverly weaving in a Romanian folk song into a series of dances played at ever-increasing speed. It’s an extrovert’s piece. Composer: George Enescu Performers: BBC Concert Orchestra Conductor: Barry Wordsworth Recording date: 19 April 2004 Date of broadcast: 20 October 2004
