Circumcision: Whose decision should it be?

Live Wires

Available for over a year

Should it be up to a parent whether their child is circumcised? An estimated 8.5% of men in the UK are circumcised, the vast majority are Jewish or Muslim - where circumcision is nearly universal. However, in both the Netherlands and Denmark, the national medical associations say circumcision is a breach of a child's human rights. Comedian Tom Rosenthal, who was circumcised as a baby, says he feels resentful that an "important part" of his body was removed without his consent. Joining 5 Live's Nihal Arthanayake, he speaks to a medical ethics expert and a representative of Milah UK, a campaign group set up by the Jewish Community to promote the rights of Jews to carry out circumcisions.
