A former government advisor on drugs policy says medical advancements are being held back by the British Government's "arcane" legislation. Professor David Nutt, who has worked in drug policy for 40 years, argues better treatments could be available for a range of conditions, including Parkinsons, PTSD, OCD and depression. Speaking with BBC Radio 5 Live's Geoff Lloyd, he claims controls on certain drugs, such as LSD and MDMA, are preventing legitimate medical tests from being conducted. The Home Office said they recognised "the value of important scientific research", and this is why there was "a clear regime in place to enable medicines – including those containing controlled drugs – to be developed, licensed and made available for medicinal use in the UK".
