Being gay in 1960s Britain...

Anne Diamond

Available for over a year

This summer marks fifty years since homosexuality was partially decriminalised in England and Wales. The author Phillip Hensher put the act into the context of the time for BBC Radio Berkshire's Bill Buckley. Phillip Hensher: "It was a big and important first step, there had been an evident shift in public attitudes. "After that there was the first protections of certain aspects of homosexual behavior. The 1967 act came with such strong recommendations from the law makers that gay people conduct themselves with dignity. "They envisaged people would go on in secret. "The real first important step was the beginning of gay pride in the 1970s... it has been a long journey."
