The ambulance that takes the dying to their final destination

We Need to Talk About Death

Available for over a year

Many of us don’t expect to be in hospital at the end of life. For those who want to get home to die, it can take time – arranging carers and hospital equipment, for example. The final sticking point is often transport. Some people end up dying in hospital against their wishes when the ambulance is delayed by an emergency 999 call. This is where the NE Ambulance Service has come to the rescue. They have dedicated three ambulances to ensure that the dying reach their final destination. Joan Bakewell talks to Naomi Stephenson of St John Ambulance who works with NE Ambulance Service. Image: Ambulance from NE Ambulance Service arriving at A&E. Credit: BBC.
