The baby who was ‘born twice’

5 Live In Short

Available for over a year

A baby in Texas has essentially been 'born twice' after being taken out of the womb prematurely to remove a tumour that could have killed her. Doctors performed open foetal surgery in order to remove Lynlee Boemer from the womb before putting her back so she could be born again twelve weeks later. Dr Darrell Cass, co-director of Texas Children's Fetal Centre and one of the surgeons who performed the operation, told 5 live Drive: “Amazingly the foetus pulled through. The baby is totally normal now. This has only been done successfully at two other places in the world.” He also said the mother had made an “incredibly brave choice to undergo this heroic operation.” This clip is originally from 5 live Drive on 24 October 2016.
