Speaking English didn't automatically help two South Africans feel at home here. Brad came to the UK in 1990 when he left South Africa to learn Kung Fu, and eight years later he met Pippa, who was here on a two year visa. It was love at first, and they decided to settle here, though Pippa initially resented the thought she'd never return home. Though they did discover, as they found their feet here, that you might be able to take someone out of South Africa, but you can't necessarily take South Africa out of them. Now married with two children, and living happily in North Cumbria they feel that there's no going back either, because in South Africa being an English speaker made them an unpopular minority. . . .
