Synonymous with Christmas, and well known for its bright red breast, the Robin is one of our favourite birds. As well as hearing them in woodland areas and hedgerows, they are a common visitor to garden bird tables and can be trained, with a bit of patience, to take mealworms from an outstretched hand. But don’t be fooled by their miniature size and charming looks - they are extremely territorial, and if a display song fails to drive an intruding Robin away then a territory holder might resort to an all-out attack that can result in the death of one of the birds. They tend to be one of the first birds you will hear during the chorus, and are one of the last to sing at night as the males try to attract a mate. So their contribution to the dawn chorus is powerful, upbeat and musical.
