Croagh Patrick, Co. Mayo: Prayers Against Conscription

World War One At Home

Available for over a year

The stunning mountain, Croagh Patrick, looms over Clew Bay in County Mayo. Named after Saint Patrick, whom it is said spent 40 days and 40 nights on the summit in prayer, it’s a site of Christian pilgrimage. Each year, on the last Sunday in July, thousands of people traditionally scale the mountain to hear mass and a sermon, which is given on a different theme each year. In 1918, towards the end of the war, the theme was against conscription being introduced in Ireland. Location: Croagh Patrick, County Mayo 53°45'53.9"N 9°39'34.6"W Image: Croagh Patrick
