The headteacher of a school in Grimsby has told BBC Radio 5 live that he is cancelling two school trips to France – even though he feels it’s “giving in to terrorism”. A total of 96 pupils aged 12 and 13 from Tollbar Academy were due to depart for St Omer in two groups over the next two weeks. David Hampson, chief executive of the trust who run the school, told Peter Allen that the decision followed advice from the French Ministry for Education, which said foreign school groups should avoid travelling to France for the time being. He said: “It was a decision we made with great regret, but it was necessary and we felt in the interests of the safety of the pupils. “It's giving in to terrorism, and they're achieving their ends without even violence, but in this case I'm in a position of loco parentis for children that are 12 and 13 years old. The parents are in an absolutely hideous position. The children want to go, [but] the parents have obviously got concerns about their safety, as I have. I met with them last night and I told them we'd made a decision in their interests. I've had such positive response from the parents and lovely emails this morning.
