The Introduction of Water Births

My Century

Available for over a year

"When in labour... they were asking can I have a shower? Can I have a bath?" Michel Odent introduced the concept of homelike birthing rooms and birthing pools in French state hospitals. "The goal is to facilitate the first stage of labour. The goal is not to have a baby born in water." Originally a surgeon, Michel considers himself one of the last "general" surgeons, trained in all disciplines. Among the operations he performed were Caesarian sections and he became interested in the ethics of giving birth. In this interview Odent talks about his views on the safety of water births. This was broadcast in 1999. For more up to date medical advice, please consult your doctor.
