This year the BBC’s Proms – a string of classical concerts – has been brought back to the BBC World Service after it was cut from the schedule five years ago. Highlights from the 76 concerts were brought to the global audience in six one hour broadcasts featuring every weekend. With this final instalment near, Rajan Datar hears how listeners from around the world both appreciated and questioned the coverage. Series producer Radek Boschetty discusses how the music was chosen and how cultural programming fits into the station’s remit. The BBC Witness team are also joining the musical festivities as their programmes during the month of September have all been dedicated to musical stories. And, listeners have been singing the praises of their profile on Somali composer and vocalist Maryam Mursal – a stand-out singer from the 1970s.
