Shirley Spencer’s Story

BBC Radio Leicester Special

Available for over a year

Shirley Spencer was very young on VE Day yet has vivid memories of the party held in Birstall, Leicester. She treasures an old news-cutting showing an old photo of the street party with bloater paste and spam, sandwiches, jelly and fizzy pop, which was a real treat. There were games and competitions too with a lovely legs contest for the mums and a knobbly knees contest for the few men there. These were older men from the Home Guard and the police. Shirley remembers feeling very happy, and all the children knew that VE Day meant many of them would soon see their Daddies. Image: Shirley in her childhood and her street party
