Leicestershire: Gurkhas

World War One At Home

Available for over a year

There are strong connections between the Gurkhas who fought in World War One and Leicestershire. The Gurkhas came over to Europe from India to fight in late 1914 along with the 2nd Battalion of the Leicestershire Regiment. Among them was Kulbir Thapa, who received the Victoria Cross for rescuing three men from German lines. In Lubenham, Liz Powell has a cache of letters from her father who was the medical officer for the Gurkhas fighting in Mesopotamia which detail their bravery. BBC Radio Leicester’s Bridget Blair has been finding out more and talking to Narren Rai, a Gurkha veteran now living in Coalville with other veterans and their families.
