Gay Games: More Than Just a Sport Event

Not by the Playbook

Available for over a year

Gay Games 9 takes place in Cleveland, Ohio this week. The event was the brainchild of Dr. Tom Waddell, a former USA Olympic decathlete who in 1982 organised the first Gay Games. It was there he met athlete Sarah Lewinstein and they married and had a daughter together. Tom died of AIDS in 1987 aged just 49. Sarah Waddell-Lewinstein has been telling Sportshour about the legacy of the Games for the gay community, for wider society and in her own life.
