Burslem, Stoke: Remembering the Fallen

Following the erection of the Cenotaph in London, communities across the country wanted to follow suit and commemorate their lost loved ones with memorials. In Stoke-on-Trent, the fallen were remembered with plaques on the pubs, such as the former Dog & Partridge on Hot Lane in Burslem. These memorial plaques were paid for by members of the local community, often it’s claimed through pubs. They were made from materials ranging from wood to brass or even carved out of stone. Many were put on the side of pubs and list the names of locals who died in the war. By the 1960s, civic authorities in Stoke-on-Trent were regenerating areas and it’s said many of the memorial plaques were lost. We’ve been hearing about efforts being made in recent years to remember and conserve the ones which remain.
