Clarendon Park, Leicester: Two Friends Went Off to War

World War One At Home

Available for over a year

Like so many other young men, two friends from Leicester went off to fight in World War One. They were neighbours too, living only a few doors away from each other. So how did their families feel when one of them lived, and the other lay dead in Western France? Thousands of other families faced the same scenario, and in many cases, friendships were broken as mothers and fathers struggled to cope. But Foster William Charlton and Ernest Read made a pact to look after each other’s families – a pact that has united their families ever since. Location: Montague Road, Clarendon Park, Leicester LE2 1TG Image shows (left to right) Ernest Read, Lillian Charlton and Foster William Charlton, courtesy of Liam McCarthy Presented by Bridget Blair
