It's 40 years since the American author Armistead Maupin had a short story published in a newspaper telling the story of gay life in San Francisco. From there, it got turned into a series of best-selling books called Tales of the City, that have now sold over five million copies around the world. The latest and ninth installment is called 'The Days of Anna Madrigal', telling the backstory of one of the main characters in the series, who goes on a road-trip to rediscover her past. BBC Radio Manchester's Becky Want caught up with Armistead Maupin and he started by describing his character Anna.
