In 1983 violence erupted between the Sinhala majority and the Tamil minority in Sri Lanka. Hundreds, possibly thousands of Tamils were killed in the capital Colombo. The violence ended after a few days, but the killings had sparked off a civil war which would last for more than quarter of a century. (Photo: The aftermath of the violence in a street in Colombo.
