Language and poetry at Buick Memorial

A Kist o Wurds

Available for over a year

Willie Drennan and the children of Buick Memorial talk about the Ulster-Scots words for body parts - as well as words like ‘glaur’, ‘sheugh’, ‘sleekit’, ‘thrawn’ and ‘crabbit’. Teacher, Helen McQuiston, explains that there is a great inter-generational experience as the children talk to their grandparents about the old Scots words; and finally, the children recite a poem called ‘Champ’. (Broadcast: 20 Feb 2005)
