Dairy Research

On Your Farm

Available for over a year

The Crichton Royal farm is no ordinary dairy unit. The former psychiatric hospital farm on the outskirts of Dumfries in south-west Scotland is home to a herd which have been used for dairy research for 50 years and is now at the centre of work with Scotland's Rural College into the environmental impact of agriculture. Nancy Nicolson meets Hugh McClymont, the award-winning farm manager who has to balance the demands of making his herd sustainable while also making the cows and their rations available to the precision demands of researchers.
