55,000 people completed the BBC Loneliness Experiment. Claudia Hammond reveals the results and discovers the loneliest times of life and the top solutions in tackling loneliness. Researchers from the Universities of Manchester, Brunel and Exeter, supported by Wellcome, developed a questionnaire asking people what they thought loneliness was, when they felt lonely and for how long. In this programme Claudia discusses the times of life when people feel most lonely and the most popular suggestions for overcoming loneliness as suggested by the results of the questionnaire. Claudia also meets Professor Barbara Taylor from Queen Mary College London to discuss the history of loneliness and solitude and how attitudes have changed significantly through time.
