On Wednesday the chief constables of three forces will appear before MPs to explain their handling of "Plebgate" - when officers claimed they'd been called 'plebs' by the former chief-whip Andrew Mitchell. It comes after apologies for the police handling of Hillsborough and the death of Ian Tomlinson. The policing minister said a recent poll suggesting that two-thirds of the public still have confidence in the police is "quite surprising" given various reports of misconduct. Sir Hugh Orde president of the Association of Chief Police Officers says confidence in the police is remarkably stable.
