On Wednesday the chief constables of three forces will appear before MPs to explain their handling of "Plebgate" - when officers claimed they'd been called 'plebs' by the former chief-whip Andrew Mitchell. It comes after apologies for the police handling of Hillsborough and the death of Ian Tomlinson. The policing minister said a recent poll suggesting that two-thirds of the public still have confidence in the police is "quite surprising" given various reports of misconduct.
