The Biafran war ended in January 1970. It had lasted for almost 3 years and split Nigeria. The word Biafra had become synonymous with famine and suffering. Ben Okafor was 12 years old when the fighting started. He fled his hometown with his family, worked in a refugee camp and even volunteered as a child soldier.
