The recession is being felt in the paddocks of Newmarket, with the number of Thoroughbred racehorse foals born this year down by a quarter on 2008. The Managing Director of the National Stud, Brian O'Rourke, tells Sarah Swadling that in the long term the reduction could improve welfare and breeders' incomes because it comes after a period of overproduction.
