bbc.co.uk/somerset last chatted to you about a year-and-a-half ago. What have you been up to since then?

The last year-and-a-half has been a bit of a mad one. I started playing all over the world with Boy George and things have developed on from there.

I'm now going back to all of those places off my own back, which has been fantastic. I've just come back from Asia, and I'm going to the States next, and then Canada.

What's your lifestyle like as an international DJ? Is it as glamorous as it sounds?

I love it – it's great. I've worked all my life to try and get to the stage where I'm at now and it's great to be playing with the best DJs at the best clubs all over the world. So from a career position, it's a dream come true.

Socially, it's also interesting and very diverse. You're never in the same place, and even when you go back to the same countries, you're not necessarily in the same club.

It keeps it very exciting, travelling to different places and seeing different cultures. Each country has its own way of partying which adds to the excitement of the job.

What's been your highlight and lowlight of the past year?

The highlights have been the amount of travelling and the amount of places I've had the opportunity to see. Also, to feel that I'm a part of the global DJ fraternity.

On the flip side, we did 150,000 miles last year. That's a lot of waiting around at airports and getting past customs. Sometimes I come off a tour and I'm just exhausted - don't even mention the time zones!

Out of the people you've DJ'd with, who was the best DJ and who was the worst?

You should really expect a DJ to be 100-percent consistent. Sometimes you listen to DJs and you have to give them the benefit of the doubt as to whether they're having a bad day or not, as sometimes things don't go as well as you'd expect them to.

From my experience, Roger Sanchez is inspirational. I think what Paul Van Dyke and Tiesto are doing is fantastic. Tiesto is the biggest DJ in the world, and seeing him play, and the reaction he gets off the crowd, is really impressive. They're my current heroes.

I'm sure there are a few not-so-good DJs, but you can't get me to dish the dirt!

Koolwaters is the club brand that you founded. How would you describe the company?

It's quite a diverse company now where we put on events all over the world. We do radio shows as well which we syndicate; we do compilations and we're setting up a merchandise department.

It encompasses most aspects of dance music. We're trying to develop the company and make it one of the biggest companies in the world – do what Ministry of Sound is doing. They've set the pace for us, and that's what I really want to make Koolwaters into.

And it all started in Taunton!

When was that exactly?

Marc Vedo

Five years ago, at Deller's Wharf.

Why did you decide to start it in Taunton?

Before Koolwaters, there was another night I was promoting. It was a very similar concept to Koolwaters, and it was my first project which I started in Taunton nine years ago.

The very beginning of my DJ career was in Taunton – I did my first night there. I was living near Glastonbury then, and Taunton was the major town in the area.

What happened to Koolwaters after Taunton?

About a year-and-a-half ago, I came to a point where I realised Taunton had offered what it could in the respect of where I wanted to go with my career and company.

I made the decision to start looking abroad, and up and down the country.

You still have strong links with the local clubbing scene though don't you?

Yeah, I do. Matt and Marcus from Housework in Taunton first DJ'd in Koolwaters and I worked with them for about two or three years when they were Koolwaters' residents.

Lee Hallet is my studio partner and I introduced him to Marcus and Matt, and they formed the LnM Projekt who are based in Taunton.

Lee and I still work all the time – in fact I was working with him until 4am last night in his studio in Taunton!

(Ed: Check out our interviews with Matt and Marcus from Housework, and with the LnM Projekt, by clicking on the links at the top of this page.)

Do you have any plans to bring Koolwaters back to Taunton?

I would love to, I would really love to. I'm not sure how I could do it though. I think Taunton needs something fresh – a new club, or a new venue perhaps.

All of the Koolwaters events recently have been for 1000+ people, so you have to look at the time management of doing an event for 500 people in Taunton, or doing a much larger night.

It would be really nice to come back though, as I haven't played in Taunton for about a year.

What do you think is needed in Somerset to improve the clubbing scene?

I think the scene has actually died quite considerably in the South West which is a real shame. I think there's been a transitional phase which has created a deficit in clubbers, not just in Taunton but throughout the region.

Marc used to live near Glastonbury

The Midlands is still very exciting – it's got so many people and big clubs, and there are a lot more promoters putting on big exciting events.

The South West is so limited in terms of venues and there aren't that many people putting on big events. There are only a couple of venues that put nights on for more than 500 people.

It needs rejuvenating and more people to be into dance music too. It's lost that excitement, but then it would because if you don't have the nights to go to, then you start distancing yourself from that music, and then maybe something else comes, RnB for example, and then that becomes your thing.

So all of that needs to be taken into consideration.

Aside from your future plans for Koolwaters, what's next for you as a DJ?

I just want to carry on touring now, doing what I'm doing, and just spreading the Vedo way!

This is always what I've wanted to do. It's special now I've got to this stage, and I'm going to enjoy it!

Is it true you're going to be in a new reality TV programme this year?

I was supposed to be in something which is on at the moment, but I thought long and hard about it, and backed down from the idea.

Which programme was it?

It was Celebrity Love Island!

I just thought I've worked so hard to build up a very credible reputation. Yes, lots more people would have watched me on TV, but I don't know if it's the right kind of attention and how that would have then transpired into my DJ career. As soon as people start perceiving you as un-cool, it could be a road to a disaster.

It meant taking out a long time too – two months out of my schedule which is crazy as I've got my company to run, my DJ career and other commitments.

Celebrity Love Island would have been the wrong thing for me, but it's ok to watch it every so often!
