I caught up with them to find out what they're all about, and to get the lowdown on their new single. You can listen to the interview and a clip from Everywhere by clicking on the audio links at the top of this page. So, what's the LnM Projekt all about? Matt: Well, there's three of us that work in a studio, and together we make tunes. And we've given ourselves the guise of LnM Projekt. How did you all get together? Marcus: Matt and I used to be residents for Koolwaters in Taunton. Through a mutual friend there, we met Lee who had been producing for a few years. We said we should do something in the studio. We did, and here we are now. Who came up with the name, LnM Projekt? | | Left to Right: Marcus, Lee and Matt |
Lee: It was kind of a joint venture really. For our more commercial stuff, we use LnM Projekt. Tell me about the separate projects you're involved with. Marcus: Production-wise, Matt and I are only just finding our feet โ so we need Lee! DJ-wise, we run our own club night in Taunton called Housework, and we work as DJs. Matt: My projects mirror Marcus' really, as we do a lot of DJ-ing together, travelling all over the place and playing at clubs. Lee: I've done production work with Sonique and Boy George. I've been making music for about 10 years. A few years ago, I had a trance track which got in the Top 40, which was nice! I've been doing house ever since I met these guys. So, you've got your separate stuff. How does it work between you all when you come together? Marcus: I think we all bring something different to the table. Lee knows the engineering side inside and out. Lee: Matt and Marcus are on the front line if you like. They're seeing what people's reactions are, and how the crowd reacts to certain tunes. If we're working on something and we're not sure how it's going to go down in a club, it's a really good thing to be able to play it out. As a group, who are your main influences? Matt: DJ-wise, we like Pete Tong and Nic Fanciulli. Marcus: The DJs that we book for Housework are similar to our style, and what we're trying to aim for in our production projects - people like Lottie and Yousef who have played at our nights recently. I thought I'd get that in there for you โ that's the BBC! What have the LnM Projekt done up until this point? Lee: This is our first major project. We have done other tracks, but they've been much more underground. With this one, we wanted to reach more people, inject a bit of fun into people's nights out, and get them singing and smiling. You've got a new single out. What's it all about? | | LnM Projekt, working on their follow-up |
Marcus: It's an old Fleetwood Mac tune called Everywhere. It's a big, feel-good, sing-along, hands-in-the-air house record, that people seem to be going for on the dance floor. Fingers crossed they'll go out and buy it! Lee: We'd been on a night out. In the back of the cab, we heard Everywhere on the cabbie's radio โ we just looked at each other and said: "This has got to be done." We got in the studio, and it was just so exciting. We were jumping out, shouting: "This rocks!" How did the process work? You had the idea, and then what? Marcus: It took us two to three days to finish the tune, but we were using the original sample from Fleetwood Mac. We asked them if we could use it and they politely said no. So we then had to go through the process of having every instrument, and all the vocals, replayed. Lee: The guy who did the replay for the Eric Prydz track Call on Me, helped us with the replay of the Fleetwood Mac sample. So even though it sounds like Fleetwood Mac, it isn't. So that's how we got round the legality of it. Bonnie Bailey was suggested as a vocalist, and it's gone from there. Have you had any feedback on it so far? Lee: It's definitely the sound of the moment - there's been an influx of 80s re-mixes coming out. Lots of people like it and we've had lots of positive feedback, but it's been difficult for us knowing when to bring the track out, as there is so much competition. So we're just not sure how it's going to do in the Top 40. What would it mean to you if you got a Top 40 hit? Marcus: It would mean I could get drunk on a Sunday! We're happy with what it's done so far already. It was the Club Chart number 1, and it's been in the Dance Chart for about 15 weeks. The best feeling we get is seeing crowds react to it, and getting a Top 40 hit would just be a bonus. Lee: We've already had the best time from the track, and we've got the enjoyment we wanted from it. We never made the track to make money; we made it for people to have a good time. For anyone wanting to do what you've done, what would your top tips be? Matt: Make friends with Lee! You've got to start at the beginning. We wouldn't have come in with Lee if we hadn't of been DJ-ing. So we've spent about five years getting where we are DJ-ing, and then opportunities arise. You need to start at the beginning really. Lee: Be ready to try new things. I wasn't into house before I met these guys, so we've kind of found our way together. Keep at it, and keep on going. Finally, what's next for the LnM Projekt? Marcus: We're going to work on a follow-up, but it'll be hard to emulate the commercial success we've had with Everywhere. We're working on a tune at the moment, which might be our next little number. Lee: We're always working. The more ideas you have, the more likely it is you'll have success. We're just trying to churn stuff out and see what works. And we're enjoying it, and having a good time. |
