Break dancing burst onto the national scene in the early 1980s, fuelled by hip hop, the MC, the DJ, and the graffiti artist. It is making a comeback now - in the form of The Known Assailants... The Known Assailants have been break dancing together for about 18 months. They usually number seven or eight 18-22 year olds... and are all from Somerset. Three of the members or crew attend The Northern School of Dance in Leeds. But in between this they manage to come together to fightcrews from all over the country. They offer performances and workshops in the Leeds area and South West. Jake Ingram-Dodd is a crew member and attended Kings of Wessex School in Cheddar. He said: "It's fantastic to be the UK champions as we weren't expecting it and the competition was tough, but we've really worked hard to get here so I guess we deserve it. | | You have got to be fit to make this move! |
"Our name comes from a police officer who came to watch one of our first performances and said we were all known assailants! "We are going to Glastonbury this year and like last year will be doing two to three performances each day which is great. "There is definitely a break dancing resurgence at the moment with RnB, hip hop and break dance videos really taking off," he added. As well as break dancing The Known Assailants also do strength, fitness and other dance training in order to prepare them for their high energy performances. | | Flexibility and stamina are also a bonus! |
They are also experienced teachers and have worked with all ages and abilities and offer one-off workshops as well as longer residencies. The Known Assailants will be performing at the Glastonbury Festival |
