'Navy camp' in cashew farm in east
A cashew plantation in Sri Lanka
Minister Basil Rajapaksa has reportedly confirmed the establishment of the camp and local politicians questions as to how to develop it without government funding

Politicians in eastern Sri Lanka have expressed concern over the government’s move to establish a navy camp in a traditional cashew farm in Batticaloa district.

Eastern Provincial Councillor R Thurairatnam told BBC Sandeshaya that 1200 acres of cultivated land in Kajuwatta, Vakarai is being cleared to establish the camp.

He accused the government of destroying the cashew farm, resulting with hundreds of people in the east losing their income, instead of taking measures to develop the east after decades of war.

The cashew farm has been almost abandoned as a result of the conflict, but the farm was in operation –in a minor scale – and the cashew cultivation was still in force for over 25 years.

Mr. Thurairatnam said the local representatives strongly objected the move at a recent District Development Committee chaired by Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa.

Minister Rajapaksa has responded that the land was acquired to establish the camp as the it has not been developed for few years, according to Mr. Thurairatnam.

He questioned as to how to develop the farm as no funding was provided by the government to develop it.
