Eyewitnesses have told the court that MP Wijenayake shot the victim
A court in Sri Lanka has ordered the police to arrest a parliamentarian suspected of shooting dead a rival party supporter.

The Attanagalla magistrate ordered police to arrest Piyasiri Wijenayake and all others suspected of murdering a supporter of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) on 05 April.

Counsel Sunil Watagala told BBC Sandeshaya that the court was told by the witnesses that Nandana Balage was shot dead by the National Freedom Front (NFF) parliamentarian.

The NFF was formed by a group of dissident JVP parliamentarians, last year.

Police say no order was made to arrest the suspects

JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva earlier told BBC Sandeshaya that another JVP supporter is critically ill after the attack in Veyangoda, Gampaha.

It was the first killing reported in relation to the WPC elections due to be held on the 25th of April.

Counsel for the plaintiff, senior lawyer Ashoka Weerasooriya has requested the court to give an order to arrest the gun and send it to the government analyst for investigations.

The magistrate has requested the counsel to make the appeal at the next hearing as the gun is yet to be arrested.

However, the police denied receiving any court order to arrest the MP.

Police spokesman SSP Ranjith Gunasekara told BBC Sandeshaya that no order was made to arrest the suspects.

“The court only ordered to send the items to government analyst,” he said.

The hearing was postponed until 29 April.
