JVP supporter shot dead
Tilvin Silva
Mr. Silva says JVP supporters were attacked by UPFA supporters
The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) accuses the ruling party supporters of shooting dead one of their supporters in the run up to elections for the Western Provincial Council (WPC).

JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva told BBC Sandeshaya that another JVP supporter is critically ill after the attack on Monday night in Veyangoda, Gampaha.

This is the first killing reported in relation to the WPC elections due to be held on the 25th of April.

Sri Lankan media have identified the victims as Nandana Balage and Samararatne Banda.

Government denies

Mr. Silva told the BBC that JVP supporters have identified one of the vehicles that followed their vehicles and some of those involved in the incident.

Minister Maithripala Sirisena
The government has condemned the killing of JVP supporter

"They are candidates and supporters of the Alliance," Mr. Silva said referring to the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa.

He accused the UPFA of launching a campaign of threats and intimidation culminating in murders to win the forthcoming elections.

Police have seized a suspected vehicle, but "no arrests were made," said the JVP general secretary.

Condemning the killing, the government denied any involvement.

Senior minister Maithripala Sirisena said the government will take every possible step to thoroughly investigate the killing of the JVP supporter.

“It is the duty of the police to investigate and arrest the suspects,” the minister said.
