UPFA wins NW province

President Rajapaksa's UPFA already controls all PCs in Sri Lanka
The ruling alliance in Sri Lanka has secured a sweeping victory in the North Western Provincial Council (NWPC) elections held recently.

United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) won the Central provincial council elections but the results of the NWPC was delayed as the authorities cancelled the election held at one polling booth.

Re-election for the cancelled polling booth was held on Saturday.

Western province

In NWPC, President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s coalition that has won over 69 percent of the votes was allocated 37 seats.

The main opposition, United National Party (UNP) which has only managed to win 28 percent of the votes was allocated 14 seats.

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) that failed to secure any seat in the central province, has secured one seat winning over two percent of the votes.

The UPFA holds the power in all provincial councils in Sri Lanka has secured victory in all recent provincial council elections.

The elections for the Western Provincial Council are to be held in the coming weeks.
