UPFA wins provincial polls
President Mahinda Rajapaksa
President's coalition has secured a sweeping victory in the polls
The governing party in Sri Lanka, the United People's Freedom Alliance (UPFA) has won two provincial elections.

Officials said the Alliance had secured healthy majorities in ballots in both the Central and North Western provinces.

In Central province, President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s UPFA that gained over 59 percent of the votes cast has secured 34 seats and two bonus seats.

While the main opposition, United National Party (UNP) has won 22 seats with over 38 percent of votes, other opposition parties including Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna received enough votes to secure a single seat.

The final results of the North Western province is yet to be announced as the department of elections has annulled the vote of one polling booth.

But the result of the annulled booth is not expected to change the outright victory predicted for the ruling coalition, according to already announced results.

Correspondents say the results reflect support for President Mahinda Rajapaksa's conduct of the long-running war against the Tamil Tiger rebels.

A major offensive has recently pushed the guerrillas back into a small strip of territory in the north east of the island.
