JVP accuse the police of protecting ministers who unleash violence

Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of police in charge of Sabaragamuwa province, Upali Hewage, said Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) incited violence on Sunday in Nivithigala.

Five JVP supporters, three of them injured, were remanded in custody on 10 August after clashing with supporters of ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA).

General public and a police officer also sustained injuries in the incident DIG Hewage told BBC Sandeshaya.

JVP Chief Ministerial candidate Chameera Koswatta accused the police of not taking any actions against ruling party politicians who unleash violence as election campaigning is underway.

Police have failed to investigate their complaints against ruling party politicians, he said, but DIG Hewage denied the accusation.

Mr. Koswatta accused Rural Industries Minister Premalal Jayasekara and his supporters of attacking JVP supporters and offices.

“Our supporter Palitha Priyantha was recently assaulted with swords by Minister Jayasekara’s driver, Sumith,” he said.

Minister Jayasekara could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.

Elections for the North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils are scheduled to be held on 23 August.
