The main opposition in Sri Lanka has accused the government of intimidating their supporters in the wake of the Provincial Council (PC) elections.

United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian Chandrani Bandara said that government supporters travelling in the region on vehicles bearing similar number plates.

The UNP has lodged complaints with the police and the elections commissioner.

At one incident a group of those vehicles went through a military check point without being searched but her vehicle was stopped, Ms. Bandara, MP, added.

“When I questioned they said they were police vehicles,” she said.

Police spokesman, SSP Ranjith Gunasekara, told BBC Sandeshaya that he has no information about the alleged incidents.

Elections for the North Western and Sabaragamuva PCs are to be held next month.
