"Electroal system" should change
People voting
Sri Lanka's electoral system should change; it is a must and a future need, says the Election Commissioner, Dayananda Dissanayaka.

Commenting on the North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council elections, Election Commissioner, Dissanayake said the present system doest not essentially produce the peoples' local representatives.

He says a new electoral system with a balance between the new one and the old district basis system should be constituted by which representatives recognised by the people in the respective districts could be elected.

Commissioner Dissanayaka said that had the Election Commissioner's Department consulted when deciding on the election dates for the North Central and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council elections, proper instructions could have been given without jeopardising the department’s work.

Elections were announced at an unexpected time and that even the electoral registers were not duly done, he said.

He said his department is understaffed and working with a staff of 525 while thirty two positions still remain vacant.

Commissioner Dissanyaka said a large number of political party contestants and independent candidates are vying for the two provincial council elections.

"Most of them are non-serious political parties and they become a burden to the country as well to the people. They inconvenience election department on the day of counting of votes and at polling stations. By this all what the main political parties want is to get more of their people in polling stations and counting centres ", Commissioner Dissanayake said.
