UNP leader says the over 90 polling agents were chased away by the ruling party
The main opposition in Sri Lanka says it will ‘go to the streets’ against the results of the recently concluded Eastern Provincial Council (EPC) elections.

The United National Party (UNP) said it categorically reject the results that gave a overall majority to the ruling coalition.

Ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) secured 20 councillors while UNP won 15 councillors in the 37 member PC.

UNP and opposition leader, Ranil Wickramasinghe, accused President Rajapaksa, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and the election department of violating the supreme right of the people in the east.

The opposition and independent election monitors accused the ruling coalition of widespread malpractices including intimidation and chasing the polling agents away from over 90 booths.

SLMC leader is to seek legal remedy over alleged vote rigging

UNP leader told journalists on Monday that the party will launch a protest campaign and diplomatic community will be informed of the malpractices.

Rauff Hakeem, the main candidate of the UNP accused the police of helping pro-government armed groups and thugs to rig the elections.

TMVP, the breakaway Tamil Tigers known as Karuna faction, contested the elections with the ruling UPFA.

The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) leader said the EPC election was the ‘most corrupt election’ in his entire life.

Peoples will lose trust on elections, police and the election authorities as a result of the vote rigging by the supporters of the ruling coalition, he said.
