President's advisor 'threatened' UNP
A presidential advisor is accused of threatening opposition politicians in the east campaigning for the local polls.

The United National Party (UNP) said the advisor who came with ‘armed thugs’ threatened party activists to leave the area before the polls.

The elections for Eastern Provincial Council (PC) are scheduled for 10 May.

Former speaker and Chief Opposition Whip, Joseph Michael Perera, told BBC Sandeshaya that Presidential Advisor Bharatha Lakshman Premachandra threatened UNP activists in Trincomalee.

Mr. Premachandra is an advisor to President Mahinda Rajapaksa on labour affairs.

Opposition leader of Kotte Municipal Council, Suraj Anthony Jayasuriya, has made an official complaint to the police on the incident.

UNP legislator Palitha Range Bandara told journalist RG Dharmadasa that Sri Lanka Navy and police personnel also came with Mr. Premachandra and the thugs.

The group came armed with T56 automatic weapons, the UNP said.

Deputy Inspector General (DIG), Upali Gunasekara told BBC Sandeshaya that the incident is being investigated.

However suspects are yet to be arrested, the DIG said.
