'Mahinda - Pillian autocratic rule' - Ranil
Prorogation of Parliament by the president could be termed as an attempt to rule the country with the help of Pillian, says opposition leader Ranil Wickremasinghe. Opposition leader Wickremasinghe said that the government is trying to prevent the exposure of its corruption in the guise of the prorogation during the provincial council elections. He accused the government of not discussing the prorogation while parliamentary agenda had already been made for the next few days. Chief government whip, Minister Nimal Siriparla de Silva defending the president's decision said this was not the first time that the parliament has been prorogued. He said it was done according to the constitution, the architect of which is Opposition leader's uncle, former President J.R.Jayawardena. However, unlike the United National Party which prorogued parliament for longer periods of three months, President Rajapaske has it only for a month. The prorogation has been done considering the requests by the opposition which said that they needed a few days away from parliament as they are involved in the provincial council election. Minister Silva rejected Wickremasinghe's claim that with the prorogation all Parliamentary committees and bills become null and void. He said committees could be reconstituted and bills presented again once Parliament commences on 5th of June.
