Ellesmere 'Castle' The castle at Ellesmere is one of the town's best-kept secrets. Founded - probably by Roger de Montgomery, Earl of Shrewsbury - on a prominent hill to the east of the town just after the Norman conquest, it's of the motte and bailey type but was abandoned not long after being established.
Today the sides of the motte are clad with trees and its summit is occupied by a bowling green. This view, from what would have been the outer bailey, shows the castle mound and a view of the town and the Mere.
