My Peafowl and Other Animals...

Well, thank you to everyone for the lovely warm welcome, good luck wishes and words of advice! I'm being flung in at the deep end and need all the help and support I can get!

It is great to hear how so many of you have made similar decisions in life...and they worked out! To be honest, all the support is a breath of fresh air, the last few weeks have been tricky to say the least when breaking the news to everyone.
Reactions range from, "Why do you want to go away UP THERE??" to "What are you going to DO??", luckily, in between there a few individuals who can understand the attraction of the isles and a better way of life.

I realise it's not for everyone; but I am becoming weary of laying out the delicate fabric of my future master plan for others to trample on it and poke it at the seams.

Anyway, back to the topic....peafowl....or should that be be peafoul? I didn't realise peacocks were so unpopular or noisy! I was more worried about the sheep!!! The house comes with a barn full of chickens, including cockerels, two free-range guinea pigs and one peacock and one peahen! From my limited research I understand that peafowl don't breed successfully until into their third year...if Flying Cat doesn't have them as a snack before then...

Time for a photo....this is where the attraction to the Western isles started...in Scarista, Harris on our honeymoon almost 3 years to the day...we even have a 2 year old son Harris named after the event!

Comments

Hi - we have been on Mull for 4 months now (seems like we've always been here) - I know exactly what you mean about comments - why and what for? we just switched off and just stopped justifying it - we made the decision for our own reasons and people have to accept that - just because you dont want to live in the "normal" routine of life shouldnt be an issue - we all have our own reasons and choices and we have to live with them at the end of the day - we always said - if we didn't like it, we would move - I just love island life, the locals are great, the peace and tranquility, the freedom for my daughter (and me - ha ha). Jealous about your pea fowls - sound loads of fund - lots luck to you all.

Please send dressed peafouls by return of post...on second thoughts, better use an independent carrier, or they'll be a bit smelly by the time they reach Orkney... Babybipeds were very fortunate not to have been conceived here...Mainland and Pomona not ideal names for boys! But Harris and Lewis! (if, y'know, things transpire, like they have a habit of doing) Excellent. Lovely pics...

Flying Cat from looking forward to more

Hee! Hee! No more babybipeds planned (but third babies are like buses, I'm told - so who knows!) We are thinking of getting a dog though...woof woof...!

Happily Ever After from Ayrshire will have to do for now!

A dog? And you have your heart set on a Cairn, from the rescue squad?! An Airedale? Varmint dogs all. Stick to a lab or, better still, pictures of hounds nicely framed on the wall in the loo.

When we moved to Orkney my grandmother (born 87 years ago in Findochty) asked me if they had electricity 'up there'. Friends were divided between thinking we were crackers, and those who were really jealous. Good luck!

Stromness Dragon from The modern world

It's got to be a border collie. They are just a natural part of the landscape. Some of them even blog, though I've always been a bit sceptical as to the veracity of the postings...

Good luck and welcome to the sane world. Don't worry about the negative stuff from the mad folk on the mainland, just smile and nod and ignore them. When I first moved up to Shetland, my mother in law disowned me (for the third time). My twin sister said she would come up for Christmas...that was 15 years ago and she still hasn't been but I'm happy here. I'm buying my house and planning for my old old age spent here with the lovely people of Unst. Enjoy life. PS I like to noise of peacocks so if you ever want rid of them.............

Better tell everyone how to pronounce Findochty SD...like the bus driver between Crail and 'Ainster'.

Flying Cat from would quite like to live in Anstruther

Anstruther is very nice. If visitors plan to have a bite to eat in the snug snack place in/near the Fisheries Museum, be sure you get there before the lunch break from the school up the hill. What's so special about Anstruther for you, FC? Not just the fish and chippie, I am sure.

It might be the Fisheries Museum...
