Once Upon a Time...

Once upon a time there was a little family in Ayrshire who decided to go on their biggest adventure yet by leaving behind everything they know to go and live on a remote croft house by the sea.

Inspired by too many episodes of "Build a New Life in the Country" and amazing tales of success and happiness on Island Blogging (FredBlog) the family waste no time in making several hasty trips to the islands armed with estate agents schedules and romantic ideas.

Within a matter of months, and to the horror of almost all friends and family members, the family announce that they have found their dream home complete with 26 Hebridean sheep, chickens, ducks, two peacocks and a black and white barn cat.

Will it all end happily ever after?

The view from the croft

welcome to the mad world of ib! of course it will end happily ever after,if you don't believe that there is no point in making the big step--i left family and friends in scotland in 1976 when i followed my late husband to the south of france and now i'm getting hitched in the new year in NZ and once i sell my house here i'm relocating to nz--you're still staying in scotland so you will still be able to see family and friends so it won't be that bad! live and enjoy: life is too short so make the most of it!!

carol from halfway to paradise

I do hope so! Good luck, and keep on blogging with your news. Er...peacocks??

Jill from EK

Whether it stands a chance of "happily ever after" may well revolve around the depth of the pockets, or the steadiness/ velocity of income flows. Anyway, good luck.

Oh, I hope so!!!!

I echo the the good wishes. I was brought up in a small town on Merseysde but have lived most of my life on Islands and have loved almost every minute. I only have one piece of advice; you have to accept the original inhabitants not the other way round. Go half way to meet them and you will be rewarded. I would add, and this is an observation rather than a piece of advice, some mainlanders can never adjust to island life if you fall into this category all you can do is accept it there is no blame either way.

Welcome to Lewis. I did the same thing 20 years ago, and I've never looked back, well actually I have looked back, but I'm still here, and it's better than mainland living. Good Luck...

Thewhitesettler from The croft Lewis

Ignore Carol - this is a very sane world - it's the others on the mainland that are barking mad!

calum from why is this jacket on back to front nurse?

i used to be someone who was very sane till i clicked onto this blog---to enjoy it you must be mad,,,if you're not a nutcase don't come onto IB(and calum your one of the originals---ps whaats up with aniie b and chrissie mary??)

carol from NOT WEARING A STRAIGHTJACKET

I am sure that you have all made the right decision. Just sit back and enjoy life now. Welcome to IB

Barebraes from Shapinsay

Good move. Glad I did similar; one things for certain (in an uncertain world), I would never move back to the UK mainland; it would be several steps backwards.

Digital Sands from Berneray

Aren't they quite noisy? Peacocks. Early in the morning, just as the day is dawning... I'd eat 'em if I were you. Unless you've no near neighbours...for several miles!

Flying Cat from why is carol not wearing a straightjacket?

FC: its on order--tailor made to measure!! they are keeping me in until end of november--so much for 15 days hmp!!!

carol from we've got sun today na na na nana!!

Just one p.o.a. :- The difference between realizing this kind of dream (or nightmare), is "a steady-income". Sorry , there is no escape. If that's covered, then go for your it , and give it all you have got . I believe: that your courage to do it , the work that you put into it and what you learn along the way, is your formula for happily ever after . Good Luck
